Considerations for Energy / Electrical Shelters

E-houses, as electrical shelters are commonly known, tend to be one of the more demanding environments a shelter can face. The shelters need to be rugged, long lived, and highly customizable – all characteristic of Openchannelflow Fiberglass Shelters.

SHELTER: Fiberglass e-house have an inherent resistance to the effect of moisture, chemical exposure, and corrosion. They are also highly resistant to problem common to metal and stick built shelters – including abrasion, cracking, and peeling.

ELECTRICAL: High vibration and oil/grease can be more often found in energy / electrical shelters than other applications, so the electrical components integrated into the shelter need to account for this. Electrical conduits are typically oversized and are EMT, IMT, or some other form of metallic rigid conduit.

The load centers used to distribute power within the shelter are most often provide with bolt-on breakers as they cannot accidentally work loose as push-in breakers can in high vibration environments.

Depending upon the need of the equipment inside, it is common to see large commercial, multi-ton air condition / heating systems keeping the interior of the shelter in a narrow operating range.

Where individual heaters are provided, they are mounted high in the energy / electrical shelter to keep them out of the operator’s way and are of a fan forced design to evenly distribute heat throughout the shelter.

LIGHTING: As a standard, the Interior light fixtures should NEMA 4X and constructed of corrosion resistant materials and of the no/low maintenance LED type, with stainless steel and fiberglass housing most common. Outside fixtures are common and they can be controlled by interior switches, photocells, or motion sensors.

DOORS: Energy / electrical shelter doors tend to be oversized double doors or roll-up styles depending upon when the equipment inside is installed how often it is maintained. When roll-up doors are used, it is good practice to have man-door off to the side (or otherwise near) the roll-up door to avoid evacuating the conditioned air inside – with the roll-up door being only occasionally used.

When used, roll-up doors can be manual chain or electric motor actuated – with the actuation hardware inside the shelter. The roll-up coil can be either inside the shelter or of an outside coil design.

Where necessary, exterior colors can be used clue operators to a energy / electrical shelter’s function without the need for the operator to ever enter it. Red tends to be used for fire related shelters, while yellow and occasionally green used for health and safety.
